===I never said you were stupid -====

I didn't think you did. It sounded to me that you were including
yourself in the stubborn or stupid category.
I read it as though you were an American (USA).

====I'm really impressed that Americans deal so
well with such complicated illogical systems of measurement. Of course, the
fact that you can't spell properly mitigates the awe I would otherwise hold
you in;-)  =====

Glad we impress you. Hope that smile is genuine.

=====Seriously, why is metric better?======

Yes, seriously.

====Because for each property that is measured in the metric system, there
is
only one unit of measurement. The only thing that changes is the prefix
denoting the scale, and not even that if you use scientific notation.
eg. distance is in metres, whether micro, kilo etc. vs inches, feet, yards,
miles
eg. volume is in litres, vs pints, gallons
eg. mass in kilograms vs ounces, pounds, stones, tons (yeah OK, it should
really be grams to make complete sense).
The system is self-consistent both within and between different properties,
which cannot be said for imperial units. This makes it much simpler to
account for changes in scale in calculations involving a number of
properties, just cancel a few zeroes - I can easily tell you that 1x10-3
kilometres is one metre....how many inches is 1x10-3 miles?========

How do we get along over here in nearmisville?
I can easily tell you that 3 feet equals (about) a yard though.
and a football field is (about) 100 yards long.
And the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association)
likes the (close to) 1/4 mile thing.
And my Mom used to have me buy 1/2 pound of bologna
and some twinkies for our lunches.
With all that misguided education (and poor diet)
I have still managed to spend over 30 years earning a living
with photography and travel the world
without starving or crashing into the Swan river.

===Dylan======

====PS Right vs left hand drive is a completely different issue, and which
is
better (for most people) would probably be best answered by some
experimental psychology of perception and reflex response. My guess would
be that women should drive on the right, and men on the left;-) ====

My guess is it is better that everyone on the same road drives on the same
side.
I think the way it is is fine. No psychology tests needed.

Dylan,
I really don't think you meant to be offensive with your response but
It did ring somewhat condescending none the less.
I do metric and imperial as well as right and left hand driving.
Kind of like multi lingual people. What language should we all speak?

I am writing this after reading some of the messages related to Buddy's
comments about Tom and a personal note from Tom.
Our little on list exchange could easily turn heated but it will not.
It will not because I would not participate
There is a point here somewhere, if somewhat cryptic.
.....Oh yeah, this is the Olympus OM list and rarely does anyone
flame over on topic posts.
I suggest we be very careful when continuing an off topic thread
or criticizing others practices and beliefs.
