A US elk is called a Vapiti (or Wapiti, spelled both ways) dear here in Europe. 
We
have four of those in another area in the Safaripark as well btw, and the male
Vapiti is not nearly as friendly as the (young) male elks!
The wild elk that now dwells in Denmark came from Scania (Skåne) in the southern
Sweden.
