Software
drivers made it work, so you couldn't boot from it. What have I missed?"

Foxy,

Don't get DOS mixed up with the hardware ROM BIOS. A CDROM is not an
extra device under DOS. If software drivers external to DOS make it
work then it can't be a part of DOS. Also keep in mind that DOS 6.0 was
completely written long beford CDROMs were standard equipment on PCs.
What you are confusing is that in older ROM BIOS systems you would have
to boot DOS (read from a disk to read the config.sys stored on a DOS
disk) Modern PC's have a ROMBIOS that can read from any disk device
(floppy, hard or CD) It is selectable in your HARDWARE (BIOS) set-up
configuration and stored in the BIOS of your machine. If floppy drives
weren't so damn cheap hardware manufacturers would have eliminated them
long ago. The CD/R/W will more than likely kill the old floppy. Hey I
remember 8" floppies that stored all of 80k and I'm really not that old.

Also you're right on money on the WD40 post. It was co-invented by one
of my client's father while he was trying to develop something to be
used a wetting agent on high speed machine cutting tools used in the
aerospace (aircraft back then) industry (Ryan Aviation I think). I
would not use it on anything I really care about. It's good for
removing those awful bumper stickers. Don't put it near your camera!
