WD-40 uses a kerosene like substances that acts as a low viscosity light
lubricant that will evaporate slowly. It is carried into the nooks and
crannies of the parts sprayed by DMSO which is what makes it such a good
penetrant. It is really not an appropriate lubricant for most fine
machinery.

3 in 1 oil is (or was?) made with vegetable oils that will gum with time
as the lubricants oxidise. It's OK for light household use but should
be avoided on any fine machinery including firearms. Talk about mess up
a trigger.
