I must admit that I've often used my OM-2n with the meter switched off
once I've checked that the speed is going to faster than 1/60 and I'm
taking similar pictures in the same lighting - and my batteries last for
years!

I'd assume that it's to avoid camera shake. Olympus probably thought
that an underexposed, sharp picture is preferable to a correctly exposed
but blurred one.
