Indeed, I doubt you'll be able to "retin" most battery contacts as there most
likely pot metal and solder won't stick to 'em. This would not apply to contacts
that are obviously solder-coated in the first place. If shiny stuff is flaking
off the coils, then it's some kind of plating and whether the underlying metal
will accept solder is hard to tell. Unlikely I'd think, and even if it did,
you'd have to strip the plate away entirely before tinning. Hey, my NASA
soldering class actually is proving useful, although the only things I really
remember are : "A good chemical connection is required to make a good mechanical
connection" and "solder is not glue."

"Re-tinning" is simply another English expression for laying down a thin coat of
solder on the item you're trying to protect from corrosion.  In other words, the
strategy you mentioned in your first e-mail to the List on this subject.
