I've found the 38mm to be difficult use in the field and the 20mm is
near impossible. With the auto extension tube set to minimum extension,
the 38mm gives 3.1x magnification and the 20mm 6.8x. With these
magnifications the maximum subject size is 11.6mm and 5.3mm respectively.
A movement of 1mm of the lens will cause the subject to move approximately
10%/20% within the frame! Trying to hand hold the camera with this kind
of precision is obviously out of the question. I find that I need to use
a focusing rail whenever I use the auto extension tube with these lenses.
Even then, I never get satisfactory results outdoors due to the wind.
(when trying to shoot at these magnifications, you quickly learn that the
wind is never "calm" :-). I've recently acquired a VST-1 and X-DE base
so I'm hoping that will make using these lenses a lot easier. Now I
just need to find some suitable light sources.
