George,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm really interested in getting comfortable
with the spot meter/averaging system. The manual discusses the strategy of
using two spots to key a dominant area and one spot from a contrasting area
and refers to this as "2:1 lighting ratio." This makes it sound a little
more organized than it probably is, but people on list have been saying
that it "works." Fortunately it is so easy to compare the difference
between multi-spot averaging and a straight center-weighted averaged
reading. I expect I'll get a good feel for it in a hurry. I do think I'll
shoot some according to this 2:1 strategy and try to get a feel for it. It
seems a lot like trying to cook without exact measurements. Pinch of this,
pinch of that. We'll see.

The Shadow feature seems less useful to me than highlight. Fred Picker's
name came up on list several weeks ago and his strategy was, once proper
development was known for a BW film, to shoot for the highlights and use
paper grades to get the proper depth of blacks. The beauty of this
approach is that is works so well at the same time for chromes.

Cheers.
