Mike,
You might want to consider the Tokina ATX 100-300 f/4, also. It gives you the
framing options of a zoom, f/4 speed throughout the range, and top quality
images. You'd have to find one used, but one can probably be had in the range
of $300-450.
I have one of these, and love it. My primary use has been for wildlife
photography. I believe there are other list members who can comment on this
lens, also.
