I well remember those from my days in a photo shop. We stocked two
varieties, one as you describe that screwed straight into the the cable
release socket, and another with a hook on it that fitted to the thumb end
of a cable release. Both models were adjustable for "thrust" which was
important because they went off with such a force that you could well
imagine them driving the inside of the shutter button deep into the camera!
I don't think we ever dared attaching one to a camera even a fraction of the
cost of an OM-3, but on quiet days we often wound them up just to watch 'em
jump.
