What IS special about Ti Plates?
TITANIUM is a VERY difficult material to form.
Where ordinary STEEL & BRASS can be formed easily using HARD DIE STEEL and a
Standard MECHANICAL PRESS, then TITANIUM has to be formed using a HYDRAULIC
PRESS, aSTEEL overlay has to be placed on the TITANIUM to be formed and
prevent wrinkles.
A wax lubricant has to be used and the WHOLE pressing has to be done against
a rubber flexible padding. In other words this is a special tedious process
and to successfully mass produce components becomes an art form as the
rejection rates are high.
This explanation has been simplified for THE OLYMPUS USER GROUP and also to
give weightage to what OLYMPUS has achieved in metal-forming top and bottom
plates of the OM4Ti.
Further explanation is given 'METALS HANDBOOK VOL4, FORMING,
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR METALS pg442.'
It is a very tough and versatile material and has been well explained by
other list members.
