Hi John 

The hilight and shadow buttons just shift the exposure +/-3 EV, making
the assumption that black is 3 stops down from grey and white is three
stops up from grey. Hence you spot meter something black, hit the
shadow button and the speed will increase 3 stops, making the black
object three stops lower than than 17 0rey. Similarly, spot meter
something white, the exposure would try to make that grey, hit the
hilight button, and the speed will lower 3 stops, giving a 3 stop
longer exposure, and hence whiter white. The accuracy depends on how
many stops are white and black surfaces actually are from 17 0rey.
