No, this is not normal. All four positions (Check/On/Off/Self Timer) should
have a clear click stop. The space you mention is likely related to this
problem.

:BTW how fast does the diafragm has to retrieve (when checked manually...


When you press down the button the blades should immediatedly close to the
selected aperture; when let it go they should immediatedly open. If not,
i.e. if closing and opening is sluggish, or if the blades stay halfway
closed, the lens needs cleaning.
