Well, there's alway the shoulder strap... But funny you should mention
it, my search has, in fact, led me to the conclusion something other
than the traditional bag is what I really want now. Especially since I
really don't need to get a new one that fits everything at once; the old
bag doesn't vanish when the new one arrives, and its present utility is
worth more than it would likely fetch on e-bay (not exactly in like-new
condition). 

I'm leaning toward the Trim Trekker, which is something of a hybrid
between backpack and vertical bag. It's a bit smaller than the Nature
Trekker, but has some of the bag features that make gear easier to get
at (I'm a bit concerned about trying to grab a lens from a true
pack-style bag and having the works fall out -- these look best accessed
when lying flat on a secure surface).

Yeah, I got to thinking about how basically a clumsy a normal bag is,
even with the combination of shoulder strap and waist band. A backpack
configuration makes more sense for long hauls.
