Thanks Hans. This was very enlighting indeed. Then why do you think the spot
metering can´t be used when the built-in flash is flipped up? The first time I
noticed this I thought it was a malfunction until I checked in the manual.
Would´t it be possible to include the expected amount of flashlight when the
spot reading is done?

Yes, but with the diffuser mounted on the macro converter in front of the lens
probably only a small amount of the flashlight will travel through the
diffuser. I don´t know exactly the size of the diffuser, but I would think most
of the flashbeam will not hit the diffuser. Couldn´t the rest of the (not
softened) flashlight create unwanted reflection effects in certain situations?
I guess one can see this system as a simpler version of the T28 macro flash
system where there one or two flashes are mounted at the front of the lens.

With the probably very limited development effort (compared to the OM system
that is) from Olympus that produced the IS-1/2/3/G40 system in the late 80´s I
think it isn´t all that bad. During the 90´s very little has happened with the
IS system, and only updated versions of the smaller IS-10 model has been
released. After the release in the mid 90´s of the #2-series screens and the
35-80/2.8 zoom in the OM system one might have expected an update of the larger
top-of the-line IS-3/IS-3000 (at least I did), but this did not happen. Instead
there are rumours now that even the IS-3 has been taken out of production. But
I guess as long as there´s life there´s also hope.

Also when using the wide or tele converters you must set the G40 in normal auto
flash instead of IVP (Intelligence Variable Power) flash mode. The G40 manual
doesn´t say why but there is a note that when a converter is attached the
aperture setting does not change(?)
BTW, what was that URL for Omni Bounce? Anyone?
