Back when I was doing most of my own developing and printing, every roll
began with a shot of a grey card and standard Kodak color card side by side.
If I encountered a difficult lighting situation, particularly with flash,
I'd shoot another "standard" in mid roll. Then, every roll had a "standard
frame" I used as a calibration reference for the color analyzer. I found it
useful for processing variations and indispensable for emulsion changes.
Saved a lot of trial and error corrections. Nowadays, the processing lab
imprints the date and frame number on the back of every print, so I've
stopped the practice. About the only time I use the databack to imprint the
date now is taking snaps of the kids. I still use the sequence number when
doing any sort of test shots.
