[OM] OM-10 woes...

Subject: [OM] OM-10 woes...

Yesterday I took my OM-10 and Tamron 28/2.8 in to Camera Traders in Victoria,
hoping to place them on consignment. (Although the Tamron is quite sharp, I've
decided I'd rather sell it and try for a 24mm Zuiko when I can afford it.)

The guy explained to me that OM-10s were slow movers, and he already had a 28
on the shelf (didn't see what kind). But he did take a look, commenting that
the body was very clean. He then tested the shutter speeds (with manual
adapter) and confirmed what I already knew: speeds range from about 1/3 stop
slow from 1/2 sec to 1/30, then 1/2 stop from 1/60 to 1/250, and a full stop
beyond that. Then he removed the lens. The Tamron mount is quite stiff for some
reason, so he had a bit of trouble. Somehow he managed to turn it past the
removal point, and it kept going.... After 20 minutes of trying to remove the
mount, he gave me the option of taking it to the service shop up the street, at
MY expense! After some discussion, he admitted some responsiblity, and agreed
to give me $25 and a spare OM-10 that he had on hand. I felt confident that I
could remove the mount at home, and just hoped that no damage had been done.

Last night, I spent 5 minutes examining the two bodies, then carefully pressed
the stop down lever on the body out of the way (about 1mm required, and it
had some play already), then turned the mount carefully off. The "metering"
lever (plastic) has a small groove in it, but everything still works fine.
Furthermore, remounting the lens repeatedly, I still can't figure out how he
managed to get it stuck - it works fine for me. (there is a missing stop screw
in the mount, I discovered, but it still mounts fine.)

Now I have a spare OM-10 to dissect, as it appears to have an electrical
problem. I will attempt to locate the infamous shutter magnet for cleaning,
without worrying too much about destroying my good OM-10.
The body he gave me is a very early OM-10, s/n <1,000,000, so it may have
succumbed to circuit failure as John H. has mentioned...
