I checked my OM-2n Manual and found:

The Check - Reset position (in addition to checking the battery) unlocks the
mirror when it locks up because:

1. The batteries are low or missing.

    or

2. The film was advanced during exposure.

The T32 booklet confirms that the T series will give a full manual discharge
when the camera is set to Manual. No mention of other brands.

I'm not sure, but it's something added on the 2N, because my OM-
2 manual makes no reference to it.

My *guess* would be that the following is happening:

In auto mode, the TTL/OTF flash sensor is telling the flash when to
start, and then when to quench when it senses the correct
exposure.

But in manual mode, the camera is simply shorting the X-sync
terminal in the shoe, and doing nothing with the TTL terminal,
causing the flash fire, then immediately quench, with effectively its
minimum duration, probably around 1/40,000 sec.

I think T-series flashes will give a full dump (ie: never quenched) in
this same situation, but I don't know about the Vivitar.
