At least with computers, it is when a manufacturer, like Apple, sells their
wares in different markets for what "the market will bear". A gray market
entrepreneur(lots of them in the middle east) will buy a load of cheap Macs
destined for South America or India and divert them to retailers in the
US. who will then undercut the factory authorized price. It makes everyone
happy, usually, except the authorized dealers and Apple. Camera dealers
will not usually do warranty service on gray market merchandise. Apple
finds it difficult to do that, but their lawyers are busy threatening the
gray market dealers. Sometimes the customer gets burned, at least on
computers, when there are incompatibilities with US systems/software.

With the current economic troubles in Asia, you are probably getting
Japanese bound Oly merchandise on the gray market now.
