Hello Christian,

Yep, The black goo was at some stage foam. It apparently turns to goo
after a few decades. Many Older bodies from the 70's now have this goo.

Apparently it is easily fixed. 1st you would need to clean the black goo
out, being very careful to avoid it falling into the body. The Olympus
Guy sells replacement foam kits for OM bodies, i think they cost about $8
or so. Try www.olympusguy.com....

Hello All,

I'm rather new and very inexperianced with anything but point and shoot
hahaha. I recently purchased a OM-1n for astronomical photos (btw anyone
suggest any good books that take a newbie into this?)
The camera I purchased looks to be in excellant condition. I did notice
though this black sticky goo aproximently 2 millimeters in width that
encircles the area where the film cover (whatever you call it) meets the
body. I thought it was a foam when I looked at it but when touching it I
notice it is sticky.
YUCK. Ok I assume there was something there that deteriated. foam or
something. Any ideas what or how. And most importantly can I clean it ?
and how? Do I need to have something replaced there for a good seal?

Christiaan
A very new Olympus fan I hope anyway
