Kris,
        Best bet here is to cock the shutter, lay in the film and make a mark on
the film and camera so that you can bring the film back to that spot. Then
just run the film back through as you said with the lens cap on and at high
speed. If you are careful and listen to the film being wound back into the
can you will hear, and feel, when the film lets loose of the spindle and
can stop prior to the leader going back into the can. Then mark the can.
Upon reloading you should go one frame past the last frame used just to be
safe.
