I ran across this question years ago in a Leica publication regarding the
mount on the M3. (I was interested because I had bought one in the service,
but did not realize that it was to be stolen later.) The M3 also had a
little play in the mount. Essentially from my memory of the article, it
said the play did not matter and that in fact it was necessary to allow
fitment of the lens to camera so that there was not distortion of the mount
or lens or excessive wear on the mount. The function of the tension on the
lens is to provide just enough pressure to hold the lens base to the
surface of the machined mount ring. The lock is there to prevent it from
coming loose and keeping things like linkages reasonably aligned. Even
though the M3 had some play the lenses had very high precision cams which
operated a linkage to a very accurate rangefinder. I don't think you need
to worry about your Oly lenses.
