There's also an mechanical reason, as this converters glass is very close to
the mount (though not protruding as in the 1.4X) there's hardly any space
left for the lens itself to fit. Many lenses with somewhat protruding or
flat back lenselements as the 90/2 wont fit :-(, but recessed as the 300/4.5
will. BTW I've not seen any generic converters having this problem.

It's a very good converter and why Olympus doesn't recommend it with the
300/4.5 (and other big lenses, though I really can't talk for this) is a
mystery to me. There is absolutely no vignetting, well, of course there's
some image degradation, but surprisingly little.
