Yes, I think you are spot on in that observation. Alt.Moose has that very cool 
Minolta Varisoft lens that has controllable spherical aberration.Curiously the 
cornea has net positive spherical aberration, (peripheral photons focus in 
front of main focal point) but the post-processing engine (occipital lobe) 
takes care of it. Curiously if one adds more pos SA say in an IOL (Intraocular 
lens for cataracts) there is no discernible loss of visual acuity (to a point) 
and the depth of field is extended.   As there is no free lunch in optics the 
cost is loss of contrast sensitivity especially at higher spatial frequencies 
especially apparent when photons are scarce.Not too fuzzy, Mike
