The oldest part of Alicante is called simply “the barrio”. It begins a bit
above the seafront promenade and stretches uphill towards the Castillo Santa
Barbara, the Moorish castle overlooking the city. That part of the barrio is
called Santa Cruz. It is an eclectic neighbourhood with steep, narrow streets
and quirky houses. More recently, it has been infested by tourist apartments
and loud partying on weekends, but it is still a nice place to go for a walk. I
took advantage of nice weather on Labour Day and did just that. That visit is
