Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city, after Madrid and Barcelona. It is just
2 hours’ drive north from Alicante, but I do not go there often enough. Last
Friday, during a visit by my friend Lars from Denmark, we drove up there to
visit the Valencian Institute of Modern Art which had a couple of interesting
exhibitions. We also took in the cathedral which among its attractions counts
the Holy Chalice (although there are competitors) and the arm of a saint
martyred in 304 AD. We finished the day by visiting the Parque Natural de la
Albufereta south of the city, a large wetland that is home to many birds but is
also where the rice for the famous Valencian paella is grown.
