Interesting--which one do you have?

The original LenBaby Pinhole/Zone Plate optic for their Optic Swap System. Reading several of the many "reviews" of LB's new Obscura non-lens, some real, although none I saw deep or complete, and others bits of fluff mostly regurgitating LB's own promo material, I saw no mention of the original version of years ago.

Renditions often seem similar to pin holes but much more light available.

The new Obscuras add a Sieve filter to the pinhole and zone plate. Wandering through quite a few images on their site and reviews, I came to the same conclusion as before — which one gives the most pleasing results depends on subject, subject and background distances, lighting, etc.

With more, and more frequent, experience, I imagine one may know ahead of time what will work . . . In this case, it was obvious in the VF that the pinhole wasn't going to please me; I didn't even shoot one.

Here are a few shots that show the differences with a particular subject. <http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/Lenses/Pinhole_Zone/PinvsZone.htm>

As LB is careful to point out, although the glow of ZP looks soft, it actually
has more detail than the PH.

First two taken hand held, PH @ ISO 3200. I went out the next day with tripod for low ISO, that's why the lighting is different.

I didn't like the PH shots, but it's worth looking at the further away bloom — it's much nicer that the foreground one. I think I like it better than the ZP shot in the second set.

I'm tempted by the Obscura. The 16 mm one puts the "elements" much closer to the sensor than the one I have. I believe their tech for producing the elements is probably finer, too. As above, it's hard to say what that may do to the images. Interestingly, there are µ4/3 to Sony E mount adapters, for manual lenses. The Sony register distance is a couple of mm shorter. So one could see how it works with both systems.
