Chris,
Re Fram filters, the cheap generic orange ones are pretty crappy (aka
Orange Can of Death), however the gold ones are very well made. As for oil,
I've used different brands over the years (Quaker State, Castrol, Havoline,
Pennzoil) in a number of cars (mostly Toyota, Hondas and a single VW) and I
don't believe there is much difference between the major brands. And even
the cheapest off-brand of mineral oil you can buy today is head and
shoulders above the most exotic motor oil you could buy in 1980. The only
major difference is mineral oil vs synthetic, with synthetic superior. I
ran Mobil1 Full Synthetic in my '04 Honda CR-V with a change every 10K
miles. It had 250K miles when my wife totaled it (no damage to her other
than her ego) and was barely down a half pint between changes.
