I'm of the opinion that they didn't exactly "fake it". But I think
they had a television set made up and ready to go to broadcast an
alternate reality in case things turned bad. It didn't matter if the
astronauts actually returned, as long as the moon landing itself was
successful. And we were going to be successful, no matter what.
Instead of a charred moon crater, they would have perished on reentry
or something.
