| Tina, dramatic shot of your son Kip on the battered Berlin Wall in late
1989. 1989 was quite a year, especially for one who had grown up in the
late '40s and the '50s with the US and its NATO alliance facing a
supposedly monolithic Soviet Bloc enemy. 1989 for me was the year I had
major cancer surgery. While I got rid of a personal cancer, I felt that
the world that year rid itself, with unexpectedly remarkable ease, of the
cancer that Soviet-branded Marxism had become. I watched the TV coverage
in astonishment, and gratitude, as one eastern European country after
another said "&*%$ you" to the Red Army and forty-some years of taking
orders from the east. And got away with it. Two cancers eliminated. What
a year!
