That is truly unbelievable. At first I wondered if it was a fake story

Quite amazing. Things can get ugly on the pointy end, when young, inadequately
trained/capable people are under pressure.

After Carol's Fall, I carefully booked us seats at the front of coach, with Carol on the correct side of the aisle for her foot in the cast. I paid extra for a late booking on a non-stop and for 'premium' seat locations. (Flying home cost about three times what our original tickets had cost. Non-refundable, but the CC's free trip interruption insurance paid it back.)

Virgin America, has always been at the top of our list for service. But clearly something had the kids at this counter flustered, overbooking, perhaps. They tried to relocate us back to the middle of coach, for whatever reason.

I stood firm, pointing out that we had paid extra for those seats, had our boarding passes for those seats in hand - AND - that having a still shaky newbie to crutches trying to get far down the aisle would completely screw their boarding process, already late starting, not to mention midflight pee break and deplaning.

We retained our seats; I don't know what the fallout on others may have been. Good flight after that, and no ill effects from not having her leg elevated for so many hours.

My next fallback was going to be to mention the consequences if she got tangled up in the narrow aisle and fell, with leg stuck in a seat or armrest. Fortunately, I didn't need to go that far, once their eyes cleared enough to actually notice the big cast.

I can sympathize with the poor local UA personnel, put on the spot by some failure in the larger system. We once waited 2-3 hours (in a nice bar, with snacks) at O'Hare. UA had the plane, and the passengers, but no crew. A crew eventually arrived from somewhere south of there, and we flew on. I wonder who got bumped to get that crew to us. Obviously, UA is still cutting corners.
