I do the same thing regardless of the destination. It lets me have
some control over my own destiny.

For importing, I actually do the hybrid approach. All of my pictures
are located in the windows user "pictures" directory, but are sorted
by year and import date. The year and import date directories are
created and labeled by Lightroom automatically. I don't have it
convert to DNG or do anything Adobe-native. Just copy the files and do
its indexing and preview thing.

As of this week, I now have my entire Lightroom library and images on
a 2Tb WD Passport drive. This way I can use either the new (to me)
laptop or my desktop. All the files are also mirrored on the desktop's
computer for backup reasons, but the Passport drive is my Lightroom
life. The Lightroom settings are the same on both computers so it's
just a matter of plugging the drive into whichever computer I want to
use and fire up my Library. We'll see how this goes, but so far, with
a few import niggles, it's working fine. USB3 isn't the fastest
bicycle in town, but it is functional. The laptop only has a single
SSD in it that is woefully sized, so the external drive is a
requirement. The fact that I can use it between the two computers
seamlessly is a bonus.

Nice picture of her too. And a nice reminder that if you meet some
sweet young thing over at the airport, you go over to her place. :)
