Thanks, Ken. As you may have noticed, I'm stubborn. When Adobe changed my defaults to force me to send my SD card images to Lightroom, I balked, and changed it back, to send my images to a folder of my choosing on my external drive. From there, I can import to LR, but the original images remain in my old file system.

When I edit images, I leave the results in LR, as the system intended, but I need to refine my folder and subfolder system. Because I have much smaller groups of images than you do, I place a jpeg copy of the edited images back in the original folder on the external drive. I need to experiment to see how best to export these directly to that file folder.

From comments here, and those I've read along with the several tutorials I've studied, I don't believe I'm the only one who has has trouble digesting the cool aid.

Jim, I'm not sure what the right answer is, but what I do is export
files to a directory on my hard drive and then post from there. This
way, I can also just glance at the contents of that directory and see
whether or not I've actually posted that photo before. A good thing
since I often times revisit photos and rework them to a different
vision.

This is also how I work with output for wedding, portraits, etc. I
create an output directory for the files, and export to that directory
in the size and file-format needed for the application. Then I upload
to the lab using the uploader tool with that app. I'll have several
subdirectories for different formats or customer outputs too. So, for
example, my proof book images only need to be a maximum of 1200 pixels
on the long side and the JPEG quality setting at 91-93%. But for
reprints, I'll go full pixel dimension of the original and maximum
JPEG quality setting. But the difference there is that I'm uploading
600 proofs, but only a handful of prints.

As to Lightroom internally linking or functionality with these output
directories? Not really any that I know of (but there certainly could
be). I consider the output directories like printers--it's a one-way
thing for Lightroom. Once that horse runs out the door, Lighroom slams
it shut and turns off the light.
