I have had the same, or a similar, issue with Win 7 and Win 10. After a
random length of time, which could be anywhere between a few minutes and
several hours, during which time the keyboard has been inactive, I have
lost all of my desktop icons along with mouse usage. The desktop
wallpaper still shows. I have to reboot the computer to reclaim those
icons and get it working again. At Charles' prompting I have set sleep
time to "never" in the Win 10 control panel "Power Options". I have my
fingers crossed for no more lost icons !

There should be a place that allows you to set the time length before the
computer goes to sleep. I suppose this would apply to peripheral hard
drives but, to be honest, I'm not completely sure. Twelve external hard
drives, sounds like the farm is turning into a server farm.
