I'm familiar with that sort of recommendation for beginning drivers. I gave my oldest grandkids a well used Volvo 240 when the oldest started driving. As their Dad described it recently, "built like a tank, and not enough horsepower to get them in trouble". When it got rear-ended in the school parking lot, it didn't get hurt at all. The car that hit it was not so lucky.

And, given the current controversy about Jeep shifters, sounds like good

It was a 2004 Grand Cherokee. No shifter issues with it. It's been a
very reliable and solid vehicle. It was recommended to us years ago to
have the teenage girls drive a jeep while in high school. That was
great advice and they would have destroyed lesser vehicles. On more
than one occasion they somehow got themselves in and out of ditches
without telling anyone.

Now it is time for college travel economy cruiser.
