To add to Scott's recommendations, as a general rule, ANY computer
that isn't chained, nailed, glued and screwed to the desk at home
should have sharing turned off. No shared drives, no shared printers,
no shared anything.

The majority of the coffee-shop (and hotel and truck-stop) hackers are
intercepting web traffic using Wireshark like tools that packet sniff
and are able to display webpages in parallel to your own screen.

First thing they would tend to look for is shared drives. Second thing
is several open ports that allow remote access or control of
piece-parts of your computer. Third thing is monitoring the webtraffic
itself.

One thing that is handy is using a deceptive naming convention for
your computer or device. Something like "Silverdome Laptop" isn't too
smart if you are a gray haired geezer with a laptop and the only one
like that in the coffee shop.
