Here in Occupied Canada, we have a hefty excise tax reflected by a sticker
on the license plate. We have a card for insurance, a license, and, of
course, vehicle registration, which comes with the little sticker. There's
another sticker on the windshield to show that you've been inspected for
vehicle safety within the past year. Officers always ask for license,
registration and insurance card. And they always look at the inspection
sticker. It's a pretty stiff fine for not having all three, or for driving
with an expired inspection.

Years ago I was in a convenience store in the nearby town of Damariscotta.
Town cop walked in. I was at the counter. He asked if that was my car out
at the pumps. I said it was. "Inspection sticker is six months out of
date," he said. "I'm guessing if the inspection's that far out of date, the
registration is, too. I didn't look. Be a good idea if you attended to
that." I smiled, said thanks, and hauled ass for the nearest inspection
station, and from there to the town office to pay my excise tax.
