I recall a number of long, leisurely flights over the Blue Ridge Mountains
of western North Carolina in the Navion. It was my favorite of the three or
four my father and Oscar, the airport owner, flew around in. It was a good
time to fly over upper SC and western NC at relatively low altitudes--from
Tryon to Mt. Mitchell, for example. If you fly it now, what you'll see
below you will be high-end golf courses and the Junior Mansions that
accompany them. I've done the flight a few times in an Aero Commander
coming up from Augusta, GA, and for a kid who grew up in them thar hills,
let me tell you the state of the land is just downright damned depressing.
