Tina, the Coolscan 4000 and 5000 (8000, 9000) ED do work under windows 7
64Bit, by means of a easy trick.
But I don't get if you mean that the Imagecon does not ... I can't help you
there.

What do you mean by "My Nikon LS5000 scanner has died"?
I have repaired myself, my 4000ED ... cannot think of not trying to fix it !

Yes, IEEE1394 is Firewire, and may look quite different looks - but the
5000ED is USB2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394
