Coming back to the discussion late. My wife and I went off to the
mainland for a quick overnight and birthday (her's) dinner. Went to a
nice Punjab restaurant. Nothing like that here.
Back to the topic: I'm looking for something to show pictures to a few
people without having to go into the other room and fire up the TV. Or
go into my office/bedroom where the computer is and no where to sit.
That's where the frame came in....and went out. Now I have a 10" tablet
but you can't really crowd around that either. Seems like a small TV
mounted on the wall would be perfect. I'm looking at this one. 24" 1080p
"smart" TV. I think that the wifi would be handy on occasion. I'll hook
it into the WD media box thingie and be able to pull off anywhere on the
network.

Tina you got lucky we tried that brand. Actually twice. First one lasted
just under a year and its warranty replacement about the same. Look at
the price vs. the feedback. Consistent across many brands. Not going
there again.
Drive it with an old XP machine ...
I have my old XP box in the garage running Ubuntu as a backup for the
Zombie Apocalypse. No way am I dragging it into the dining room. Let me
re-phrase that, 'No way would I get away with dragging it into the
dining room'. Anyway, that's what those magic rays coming out of the box
with the blinking lights are for ;)

I hear you Chris, one of the features I'm looking for is a timer or some
way to program a short time period. The TV's I'm looking at really don't
provide much versatility. This was about the only thing I liked about
the frames. Come on for a predetermined short period then off. Works out
to only a few watts per annum.
A raspberry pi ...
I read up on it Frank. Looks like a very simple solution especially if I
want some program options beyond just streaming or thumb drive.
My wife's raspberry pi[es] are delicious...... and require no electric
power
