Agreed. There are only so many ways to efficiently slay the aberration jaberwockies. Here is a history of the Tessar patented by Zeiss:

The cross section of a phone camera lens is v. interesting.

On page eight, there are MTF curves for the 50/2.8 I was nattering about. No 
wonder it takes good images.
