If you have trouble pull the drive out of the machine and stick in a USB drive dock attached to the new machine and read it that way. The new machine should have one or more USB 3 ports which is much, much faster than USB 2. Older drive docks may only support USB 2 and may be a bit cheaper but USB 2 is slow, slow, slow. Did I say it was slow? Anyhow since it will be attached to the new machine go for USB 3.

I have one of these drive docks which I'm perfectly happy with <http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817620034&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo>

But this one costs a bit less now and has better overall ratings

One possible glitch is that these drive docks expect to see a Serial ATA drive (SATA). They are compatible with SATA versions 1, 2 and 3. SATA has been around for a very long time but if Tom's old machine is really old it *might* have an older technology. If you can navigate to the "device manager"*** on the old machine and click on the disk drive entry it should tell you what kind of drive it is. I'd be surprised if it isn't SATA but that is a requirement to use these drive docks.

*** To get to Windows help click the mouse on a blank part of the screen and then press F1. When help comes up ask for "device manager" and it should tell you how to get to it.

Thanks, I'll let you know! He just got a new battery for the old computer

formally "share" the files in question between the 2 computers.
Otherwise you won't even be able to see them let alone copy them.

With Tom on his old machine: go to Windows Explorer, navigate to the C
drive (and others if you have them), right click the C drive and offer
to *share* it for *read only* access. You can also offer write access
but there's no need for that here. You can also navigate down the list
of folders and share only specific ones if you choose. I'd normally
recommend only doing selected ones but Tom wants to copy all of the data
files which may be just about everywhere.

With Tom on his new machine: Go to Windows Explorer and navigate to the
network section. There you should see the names of the other computers
on your local network and perhaps other devices as well such as your
printers. Click on "Tom's old computer" (whatever it's called) to open
it up and you should then see the C drive or the folders which were
offered for sharing. With another instance of Windows explorer showing
the drive on the new machine you should be able to do drag and drop from
the old file folders to those on the new machine. If you drag and drop
the entire folder it should copy the entire thing including the folder
with its old name.>

I certainly agree in principle with this but my experience seems to be
that if y
ou are moving things to Windows 7 or Windows 8 systems this way from
computers u
sing earlier versions of Windows, it is not always totally straightforward
setti
ng up the network and 'authorising' cross viewing, and/or transfer of
files. Th
is seems to be especially true if one or more of the computers has several
autho
rised users with passwords. As a result, Microsofts 'improvements' to
security h
ave not always been welcomed in my house!

I would be interested to hear how the transfer goes in practice.
