Thanks, Chris, for your comments. I really appreciate you taking the time.

Couple of points in response:

As I've said, the no-glass is an experiment, using a Fuji 550 (I think this
is the right model number) flat-bed printer
operated by an outside-sign-printer company. My experience so far is that
the only damage has been by dropping
the print face-down on pointy surfaces (don't know if glass would have
broken.) The printer ink is
built for outside use, and I have successfully cleaned (wiped off) some
substances such as splashed paint with no effect.
The ink shows absolutely no fingerprints. So far the actual risk has been
hard-ballpoint-pen scratches and, frankly,
that clients are uncertain about the no-glass. They do love the weight
reduction though (PS the foamboard also serves
as the backing.)

Like I say, it's an experiment.

On the margin thing . this actually is a new idea to me. I've worked with a
lot of (paint) artists here
and sought their opinions on a lot of the display issues . no one mentioned
this . but I think
it is a real issue. I would be interested in others on this list weighing
in on the issue.

Thanks.

Bob

>From Chris:

The photos are beautiful. I'd not present them the way you did, though.

I've been in more exhibits than I can remember over the last 20 years, and

one absolute truism is this: USE GLASS. You would not believe how many

times I've gotten work back from shows with fingerprints all over the

glass. I've even seen food, paint, and other foreign substances on the

glass! No glass = photos ruined. None of mine have ever been hurt by

people's carelessness, because glass cleans easily. Photos do not!

The other issue is the borders are too narrow; narrow borders (generally

mats) like that are seen as amateurish in the art world. The mat's purpose

is to isolate the photo from the frame. If you use glass, the mat also

spaces the glass above the photo to keep the photo from sticking to the

glass.

My matting tutorial explains it better and has an example photo of a

framed picture.

FYI, the following is a recent Gallery show I had.

Main point is this extends the experimentation I've done

with 30x40 and 22x28 prints directly on foam board. no glass

and therefore no glare and very much lighter.

Comments and Criticism welcome!
