My understanding is that the Pentax camera division that we see today
has no actual business/engineering/optical history with the original.
In fact, there are like three different companies that have and use
the Pentax name. The patent portfolio is divided up and all over the
place with same items being claimed by multiple companies that have
just agreed to play nice with each other than to try and play "Lotus".
(F1 Grand Prix reference).

I'm not sure how to read the Minolta-Sony bit. Minolta's photography
division died, but was picked up by Sony. Fortunately, Sony actually
kept and rehired a lot of the engineering talent AND maintained the
patent portfolio. In one manner, it can be claimed that Minolta is
still alive, but living under the SONY brand. But in another manner
you can claim that Minolta totally ceases to exist and SONY acquired a
patent portfolio. Either way, it is more "real" than "Pentax".

A point of entertainment. It appears that the Olympus FTL was actually
made by Canon.
