Ah, that pins down one of the two bottles I couldn't identify - Glengoyne.

So from left to right we have:
Aberlour
Balvenie Doublewood
Auchentoshan
??
Dalwhinnie
Glengoyne
Old Pulteney
Highland Park
Jura
Ardbeg
Bowmore
Laphroaig

My guess based on those I know is that they have been arranged in order of
peatiness, which is maybe what Chuck is hinting at (though you are quite right,
Jez, the peat smoke play a part in the process for everything except Glengoyne).

I wouldn't say that Balvenie Doublewood tastes at all peaty, nor Dalwhinnie,
while from Highland Park onwards in the list they get ever more peaty. And I
note that there is no Lagavulin which would be there at the peaty end. What an
omission, the shock, the horror - but I forget, this is the OM-list not the LUG!

Almost all except one which is hidden at the back and I can't remember the
name. Its grain is dried by electric hot air whereas the others are all by
burning peat.

Which ones of these are smoky flavored? Or are they all that way?

Thought this might be of interest to some of you connoisseurs?

I'm not a whisky fan but a group of local old farts got together in
the village hall last night to sample a dozen different single malts.

I wasn't convinced at the end of it - back to beer for me - but it
was a fun evening, led by my neighbour who lived on Orkney for ~10
years. He has a lot of relevant experience, a good speaking voice
(he teaches crisis management to operations staff in the oil
industry), and he even ended up the evening with some Scottish
cheeses and a mini quiz with a prize!

Did you spot the attempt at a selfie? Must trim my nose-hair...
