Well, I'm glad to see that, as I had the same concerns about the small
bulbs some of my fixtures use. As for my standard bulbs (E27) I have used a
mix. I tried the CFB but in a word they stink. The color is terrible, they
are slow to come to full brightness, and their lifespan has been grossly
overstated. If they are turned on & off multiple times in a day their
lifespan is less than incandescent bulbs. Even when used as a stairwell
light that stays on all day, I have yet to have one last more than two
years. Then, being the conscientious person that I am, when they do fail I
have to store them in the garage until I make my yearly trip to the
Hazardous Waste Disposal Site (old car oil, old paint, etc.). The LED bulbs
are a bit better though more expensive. They have found their way to the
hallways, stairwells and timed inside security lights. The color is still
crappy but in these locations I don't care. Longevity seems to be
good...three years and counting so far. There are a few lamps, mainly in
living spaces where I read, that I continue to use 60W incandescent bulbs
because I like the warm color and it is easier on my eyes. I have
accumulated enough to last me a while. I hope by time they run out they
will have corrected the color problem. Lastly, I have about 15 recessed box
lights that use indoor floods. These are incandescent bulbs that were
installed when the house was built in 2001. So far only three have failed
after 13 years and I have replaced them with fluorescent indoor floods. It
will be interesting to see if they last as long as the originals. None of
this has made any noticeable drop in electricity consumption. I could do
better by dropping the thermostat 1 degree in the winter or raising 1
degree in the summer. And the thermal barrier I put in the attic five years
ago puts both to shame: immediate $20 drop per month (when it is warm which
is nine months here).
