Yes - depends how you define firmware. If we see it as an integral part of the 
camera's basic operation - Leica had an M3 easy loading improvement device 
available in the 1950's. That was a kind of firmware update as it fixed a 
difficulty with the camera in response to customer dissatisfaction and was not 
a new model. Nikon continuously updated its metering prisms in the F and F2. 
Many other examples no doubt. Yes, they are physical and were not free but the 
intent is the same.
