thanks for the lead. I've seen photo's like that, he sure was good at it.
His style seems to be to isolate the flower, and I think I understand why.
I'm not very much into black and white myself, but I had a quick try on a
suitable white magnolia I shot this spring. The darkened background with
some quick LightRoom actions:
