As I see from his own response (but had already understood when you pointed
it out). You are absolutely correct, of course, that a local SIM is the way
to go - and if John Hudson is still around, I think he will confirm that is
the way he went when visiting the old country from Canada.

I think that Bob was referring to WiFi, not the cellphone system in the UK.
He can use his mobile from anywhere in the world if it picks up a wireless
signal and that, I think, was his intention rather than bothering with
switching to GSM. But if he can get his iPhone unlocked he can use any
local SIM at much lower cost, for data or voice.
