Wow,glad there was no damage to the lens.

Not quite the same, I did it in reverse order, acquiring a 46mm filter to go
directly on the lens, with the step-up ring
on top of it.

This is exactly why I did the above combo of filter and ring. It allows the
lens to retract fully, as the 46 mm filter
fits within the surrounding bezel. I can then use any of my many 49 mm filters
on the front of the step-up ring, as the
clamp-on hoods don't interfere with the threads.

I haven't yet, but I plan to remove the filter glass and maybe even use some
Loctite to attach it to the step-up ring.
The assembly would not be coming apart me in use.

The truth is, though, that all this is for show. In day to day use, I prefer
the folding rubber hood for compactness
when folded and ease of getting the cap on and off.

It appears not. On a forum or two and on TOP, many folks are using the faux
Leica style metal hoods, which also keep the
lens from retracting fully, and have been for many months, with no reports I
saw of trouble. Others made the comment you
just did, and that I made earlier here, but with no reports of any actual
problem with the lens.

If you want to be double safe, pick up a cheap 46 mm filter as spacer.
